At the dinner table
“Well you didn’t have to wait up for me “, he pulled out a chair and sat next to her, ” you could have done your dinner earlier”.
“I didn’t” she shook her head , ” I am sitting here to give you company”.
She then served him rotis and curry.
” I know you don’t like eating alone”, she informed him.
He gave a lopsided grin at that.
She walked past him without calling him back. He was the most handsome person for her once, but now she could only see him as an average man, for whom she bore no feelings.
For her he was just any other man from the crowd.
“So will you be doing that “? she asked him
“Do what “? he asked her while turning a page of their old wedding album .
“Did you even listen to anything I said”? she enquired with a scowl
“Umm…Actually no”, he replied like a kid caught with a candy.
“Then what were you doing while I was ranting the list “, she asked him almost fuming now.
He knew how to calm her, “I was just trying to understand, how a woman could look so beautiful and yet retain for the past 40 years”.
A smile slowly crept up her lips and she gave a small peck on his cheek.
“Care to tell me , when is your birthday”? he asked while skimming the jeans’ which had been showcased in the women’s section.
“Day after tomorrow”, she replied and then after a pause” But why are you asking ? You wouldn’t be able to attend it right”?
“Ah this one “, he exclaimed finding the right one for her “What happened”? she asked , concerned for him.
“Uh well I am buying vegetables”, he said to cover ” Now, to answer your previous question, yes I will attend”.
” But I will be able to “, she cut him off ” do it alone “, he completed for her.
” I know you can do it, but behind that facade of a strong woman , there’s a little girl ” , he could hear her sigh ” who , my dear, wants someone to hold her hand while she cuts her cake, to sing a birthday song for her”, he said while passing the jeans along with other goods to the woman standing in the counter section ” And I want to be that someone”, he could imagine her smile. 😊
“What’s on the menu today “? he asked her while grabbing an apple from the fruit basket.
“Well I am not sure,” she replied walking towards the fridge ,” let’s check out the ingredients first”.
He couldn’t help but smile and shake his head, ” darling are you ever sure of anything”? he asked casually, helping her with chopping onions.
“Yes”, she turned to look at him “I am and will always be sure of being with you “.
“It must have been serendipity, that we met ,” he told “I wasn’t sure whether you will stay”?
“But you still had a strong belief on us”, she replied as he tucked a Pansy on her Grey hair.
Sometimes I turn up to be so busy, that one moment I remember I’m missing her and the next , I have tasks to complete. Is it proper that I didn’t shed tears while mourning or is it good enough for me to shed them now? I don’t know either will help me stop avoid that feeling of emptiness some where. But as life goes on the next moment may I will reach some where, she thought I should be.
“He is not the one for you” , her grandmother told her while opening door for her.
She could feel her temper rising, ” How can you say that ?”
The old lady took a seat next to her ” Tell me, did he ever try to surprise you?,
Is he possessive ?
Does he value your presence?”
Her mind bell rang a big NO .
I went home and knew she would be waiting for me.Just as I unlocked the door she cried “meow” out of nowhere, ran towards me.
She knew she would lose again, that’s why this time she didn’t put up any hope , only to get back where she started .
