Starting Over

Two days before the summer holidays would be over. The street was filled with energetic little kids bustling in and out of the books and other shops which offered valuable discounts for the upcoming session. He wanted to head straight towards the ice cream parlour where his friends would be waiting for him, but a certain petite looking woman caught his attention. She was passing through the doors of one of the most popular book shops unaware of his eyes which were tracing her movements.

He stealthily followed her inside. While she was searching for books in the biography section, he browsed randomly through Non-fictions. Stealing glances from the texts he could see the similar quirks which made him fall in love with her. The excitement whenever she found something new, the scrunching of her nose when a certain book had not been titled aptly; suddenly he felt a rush of adrenaline .

He knew he had to face her , no matter what he had to talk to her. “Keya ,” her name rolled out smoothly out his tongue.

She slowly turned to face him. He thought she would be enraged, or probably disgusted ; but as usual she surpassed his imagination.  Keya was smiling at him , waving him to walk over towards her.

“How have you been? ” she whispered , eyeing left and right to check if somebody was eavesdropping.

“ The same as you,” really smart Arvind he berated himself.

“I always knew you were secretly a seer,” she then thrusted a book towards him the title of which said ‘LET’S START ALL OVER AGAIN’.

He was left speechless for a while , then as if he was struck with a bucket of cold water. Arvind looked at her with a sheepish smile “ I can do that.”

Proposal

” I took the job”, he told me over the phone and I suddenly felt my mouth opening, gaping like a fish.

I was walking through the tiny lane of a vegetable market and my sudden halt made the person behind me grumble a few words. Most of which included ‘younger generation’, ‘phones’ and how our lives are a mess.

“You told me , ” I started walking again “You needed time to gain some semblance and what about”? turning towards a shopkeeper, I realized that my voice had been amplified; much more than intended. “What about the worries you shared yesterday?”

He was quite for a while and I had to check if the line was still on.

“Well, the boss called me last night.”

” And what convinced you?” I was smiling now.

“I surely am easily persuaded,” he sighed, there was some relief in that.

“Ask me, I have been trying to do that for four years now,” I was still standing in front of the shop.

“Trying to make me fall in love with you?” some sort of cankering could be heard .

” You realized that now,” shopping now would not be of much use, I realized. He would be here soon.

“Can’t share the secret , anyways where are you now?” I could hear the roar oh motorbike.

Bantering

After a bickering and bantering session yesterday. I felt the need to ask him “Do you think what we are doing is healthy?” I sighed “I mean we argue most of the time”.

A smile made its way into his face “Both of us are stubborn individuals and we never did agree to go on head along with every decision?” he quirked a brow.

“No, we didn’t . May be this is normal for us.” I wondered before munching on the last of my biscuits.

“It is dear. Believe me”!

On time

“How did our life come into this?” he said trying to get a good look at his long estranged wife, who was now busy sipping coffee.

“You mean me maintaining a distance of few meters from you?” she raised a brow and then chuckled , giving him a glimpse of her uneven teeth. “We are lucky you know”.

He kept on staring at his still mildly warm coffee “You are right, we got together on time”.

Days of Joy

At the family reunion

Early morning, Christmas Day

Vivaan was opening the gift from his father. A person with whom he didn’t have a close relationship, unlike his mother. When he finally got a peek of the front face of the gift, his hands started shaking, slowly he tore open the wrapper. Unable to control his happiness, he slumped down on the nearest sofa, his legs felt like jelly -O.

” Papa how did you know”? he couldn’t complete the sentence, his voice filled with raw emotion. He turned his face to watch his father, a man whose features had almost greyed with age.

His father smiled, making the wrinkles on his face clearly visible, an actor of the yester years, yet he managed to act as cool as his old days ” There’s someone who’s been observing you for the past few months”, he then sneaked a glance towards the kitchen where his daughter -in- law was preparing breakfast for them ” she knows a lot about you, has learnt much more than I could throughout these years”. He paused for a while and then in a heavier voice he said ” take care of her, she needs to know that you love her”.

Late at night, the same day

Vivaan slyly crept away from the party and walked toward the balcony where he could see a lonely silhouette of a woman.

He walked up to her and placed a kiss right on her cheeks.

She let out a squeak and then turned to berate him, but before she could do any of that he placed a hand over her lips ” let me say this, because I will not be able to repeat it. I felt great about the gift that you chose for me and the one that you suggested my father for me. I know it’s difficult to live with a stoic person, but you are doing a great job and I would like you to continue. I promise to be more open to you. I guess, there is a bit of love involved”, he finished looking terribly nervous and confused because this was the only time when his wife was expressionless and speechless at the same time.

He hadn’t noticed when during all his rambling she walked closer to him, and kissed his cheek, she said ” I guess there is love from this side as well.”

Expressing yourself- snippets

In a shopping mall:-

” Vihaan don’t you think we should buy this, I bet it will look awesome in your study table”, Asha was trying to direct her husband’s attention towards a customized table lamp.

Vihaan chanced a glance at the lamp and replied “hmm”.

Asha took it as a signal to buy the lamp.

Later in their home :-

Vihaan was unpacking the gifts and necessities that had bought for Christmas when he saw the table lamp, he summoned his wife immediately.

” Asha, where are you”?

” coming” She arrived within a few minutes “Yes”?

” Why did you have to buy this”? He asked her showing the lamp.

She stood there for second trying to understand the situation. This man had agreed to her ” you acceded to my decision”.

” I didn’t actually, it was just a hmm”.

Asha looked baffled at him, what does he mean? “Well if that’s the situation, then at least speak a few words,” she sighed ” At least express yourself. We are newly married, we don’t know much about each other. So please say sentences in full, I’m not the best coder to understand what your codes of hmm represent in each situation”, she rattled, her voice rising gradually.

He looked at her bemused ” woman hush, you look murderous now, ” he chuckled ” will follow your advice ok”.

She knew that was his way of apologising and perhaps she had a lot to learn about him.

A ride

They were entering a restaurant when he met an old female friend . They chatted for a while and after she left he told his girlfriend ” I had to give her a ride most of the days during our way back home from college”.

She smiled and said “you might have been her driver for a few days, but you will be giving me a ride forever”.

I apologize for such a long break. I had my post graduation exams. They are over and the good news is I am postgraduate now.😀😀

Snippet

A snippet from my new story in Wattpad,

Entering the room Vikram was reminded of the day when for the first time his father had brought him here.”Viki my boy don’t think of this company as just an asset, think of it as your God, worship it and most importantly give it your time”.2

The young boy could see tears forming in his father’s eyes; he had never seen the old man crying. He hugged the person and proudly
said” Yes, dad I’ll always remember your advice and not for once will I think this place as my income source, I’ll cherish it just like you.”He couldn’t understand why suddenly these memories came to his mind which couldn’t lurk in since his father’s death.
